Key West was once the largest city in Florida, the wealthiest city per capita in the United States and the largest producer of cigars and natural sponges in the country. Since the Navy first came to Key West in 1823, the island has always been an alluring favorite to visitors like John James Audubon, Ernest Hemingway, President Harry Truman, Tennessee Williams and many, many more. On your tour you will learn what made Key West the richest city in the United States and hear about the golden days of settlement when Key West was on the farthest frontier of a young America. Then you will hear about the Great Depression, the hurricane that destroyed Henry Flagler’s railroad, the building of U.S. 1 and the arrival of the navy during World War II.
