Excursion Description
The mysteries of early Mexican civilization come alive on the Mayan Ruins & Beach shore excursion when your Carnival® cruise docks at Cozumel. You can stroll among ancient temples at the Mayan archaeological site at San Gervasio and then spend the rest of the day relaxing on a palm-fringed beach.
Your adventure begins at San Gervasio, where crumbling Mayan ruins lie amid lush jungle foliage. These ruins were once temples, statues and shrines dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of women, childbirth, pilgrims, the moon and medicine. Listen in fascination as your INAH-certified guide regales you with stories about the goddess Ixchel. Mayan women made regular pilgrimages to the “island of fertility” in canoes to express gratitude for the children they had or seek blessings for the children they wished to have.
Stroll at your own pace through the San Gervasio archaeological site, where birdsong fills the air. Kids in particular love spotting the four-foot-long iguanas and chasing butterflies that flitter about the ruins. After about an hour of exploration, you’re whisked off to Cozumel’s Punta Morena or Playa Azul—two glorious white-sand beaches.
You’re free to sit back and enjoy the beauty of one of Cozumel’s prettiest beaches. Take a stroll along the water’s edge and collect seashells. Find a shady spot under an umbrella or palm tree, and take in views of the turquoise seas. Join in an impromptu beach volleyball game.
Book the Mayan Ruins & Beach shore excursion today to explore the ancient ruins of San Gervasio and soak up the sun on a beautiful white-sand beach. This Cozumel shore excursion is an exciting way to add fun ashore to your fun afloat.
Fun Fact: All of the structures at San Gervasio were made from a combination of stucco, honey, gum (from the abundant gum trees) and crushed shells.
