Visit Peterhof, the most brilliant of all summer residences of the Russian Tzars, once Peter the Great’s, and also wander around the breathtaking gardens and their fountains. Relax for approximately one hour as you drive through the new areas of St Petersburg and its countryside towards Peterhof, the town of palaces, fountains and parks, built by Peter the Great to rival Versailles. Among the numerous sights on the way you will enjoy a picturesque view of the recently built complex at Strelna, officially known as the State Palace of Congresses. Also, you will pass the early 18th century Road Palace of Peter the Great, the parks of Alexandria, former residence of Nicholas I and the beautiful Peter and Paul Cathedral designed in the spirit of the 16th-17th century Russian architecture. The grounds of Peterhof include the Upper and Lower Park and a number of delightful little palaces built as private residences of the tsars. Crowning the hill is Peter’s Grand Palace. It has a commanding view over the Lower Park and the Gulf beyond. Upon arrival to Peterhof you will proceed to the Upper Park designed as a French formal garden and enter the Grand Palace for an hour-long guided tour. Its interiors have been carefully restored and are truly breathtaking. View the palace from the main Staircase, adorned with gilded carvings, that leads into a suite of sumptuously decorated staterooms. You will see the Dancing Hall, the Audience Hall and a suite of drawing rooms to Rastrelli’s design. The Grand Palace commands a breathtaking view of the Grand Cascade, the largest fountain ensemble in the world that is justly considered the chief delight of the grounds. Following the tour of the Grand Palace you will descend into the Lower Gardens, a 300-acre fountain park with a number of pavilions and palaces overlooking the Gulf of Finland. Enjoy a guided tour around these magnificent grounds. The park comprises of about 150 fountains including four cascades decorated with gilded statues of mythological characters.
