Welcome, Captain Cutugno

Tuesday, April 20, 2010 by Butch Begovich

Hello Funville Community:

I hope that all of you are enjoying this Spring, I know I am as I am writing this post miles away from the ship, while I’m enjoying my vacation! While I’m here in the unseasonably warm weather we are having in Minnesota something very exciting is about to take place where I call home - the Carnival Liberty. Sort of a changing of the guard, if you will, as we get reading to send Captain Marco Nogara on vacation and welcome our new Captain, a dear old friend of mine, Captain Giovanni Cutugno.

Now you might not think that a Captain has much impact on the daily operations of a ship, but he does. If the Carnival Liberty, for example, was its own company, the Captain would be like the CEO… Or if we were our own country, the Captain would be like the President. The Captain sets the tone and the energy for the ship’s crew. He's responsible for all shipboard decisions and most importantly he is in charge of the safety of every human life, both guests and crew, that inhabit the ship. It’s a big responsibility.

In my six years with Carnival Cruise Lines, I have never met a Captain that did not take his job seriously and did not work hard to ensure that everyone on board was having a positive experience. And in these six years I have become close to a couple Captain’s who have become special friends of mine; Captain Cutugno is one of those friends.

I often joke with Captain C. (I refer to him this way, sometimes) that he is the only person I know who likes to talk more than I do. Captain Cutugno is a comedian and anyone who has ever had the pleasure of sailing with him knows that when he is introducing his officers at the Captain’s Celebration, or giving his farewell speech at the debarkation talk, you will definitely be in for a laugh and a smile. What I enjoy most about Captain C. is that he is very warm and personable. He keeps things light, even with the extreme pressures of his job – this means that if you’re working on a ship, under his command, you have an overwhelming feeling of support and openness not expressed by many others in his position.

So today, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome aboard the Carnival Liberty, my dear friend, and a man that I am proud to call Captain - Captain Giovanni Cutugno.

I am an artist and have taught art to passenger on RCI many times.  However, we love Carnival and Princess lines and have had many good experiences.

My problem is that I cannot find the right person at Carnival to talk to so that I can teach classes to your passengers.  We are sailing on the Spirit on October 27th and I will be painting even though I do not have classes.  I paint with acrylics and passengers have totally embraced this because they go home with a beautiful canvas that they painted of a port of call [I always use a port of call for the subject].

The entire class participated in the painting and then it is given away at the last class in a drawing.  Passengers receive free drawing tickets each class so the more they attend class the better their chances are of winning the painting which has been signed by all the passengers in the class.

If you could please direct me to the right person, I can submit my resume and samples of my work.

Thank you so very much.  We are looking forward to our cruise in October.

It's good to see a decent nautical staff that takes thier position seriouslty. As a former USMC member, I look forward to being on a ship dedicated towards enjoyment rather than wartime activities and hours of bordom. Most people don't realize the duties of the captain or the ships XO.

Welcome Captain we will be cruising in November on the Liberty.  In 2011 we cruised on the Glory to the same ports about the same time of year the problem was the hurricane was a few days ahead of us.  It left us with lots of clouds and rain.  Our group decided to give the ports another try this year, all we need is great whether.  We hope to enjoy sunshine, food, entertainment and relax on the LIberty.

    See you there.
