In early August I went on a cruise with my mom. I'm around 18, she's in her 40s. We got off the boat as soon as it had reached its first port, Freeport. When we goto off we found that only a couple of the shops off the dock (Specifically for cruise persons) were even open! We went into all 5 open shops that sold nothing but junk and cheap t-shirts and bought absolutely nothing! The items were not expensive but they were not cheap either. After walking around for around an hour, it was SO HOT we just got back on the boat and stayed! I know we were not the only ones who were disturbed by the heat because we found numerous other people who said they got back on also! I mean what was the point of staying out there when barely anything was open? The prices for excursions were ridiculous when we got on the boat! They were not worth the money.
The next day we arrived at Nassau. We LOVED it!! The items were ridiculously cheaper than the previous port! The shore excursions were once again expensive, but the locals offered VERY cheap prices for the exact same things! As soon as we go off the boat, natives began their hustle! I have to admit it would make some uncomfortable. *There was even a fight amongst themselves because we talked to 1 man instead of the other. Being from the north it didn't really bother us, we just went on. In town there are flea markets and shops that offer good prices. You can get a LOT of things for around $25! They are also very open to bargaining, so you won't spend more than you want to!
Basically, I would not feel bad never being able to go to Freeport again. My cousins (who went on this same cruise) told us how CORNY Freeport was, we should have listened!! If it can be avoided, book another port in the Bahamas, not Freeport!! Nassau was great!! It was very family friendly with the excursions also. Be prepared to be encounter many hustlers. And don't waste your $ in Freeport, wait until arriving at another port!
