For me it's not the ships, its the itinerary.  I'll cruise the same ship over and over as long as I visit new places and have some at sea days to soak up sun and DODs.

BTW, late this year they are repositioning the Paradise from Los Angeles to Tampa and bringing the Ship based in Tampa west.  Perhaps the Spirit will reposition the follwing year?

Unfortunately, the one remaining Carnival ship in San diego is being repositioned to Australia in late 2012.  Carnival hasn't announced if it will be replaced.  I am hoping that they will replace it with a similar ship that does a West Coast itinerary when it is not in Alaska, something like 7-day one-way cruises between San Diego and Vancouver.  Cruises to Mexico are more than covered out of Los Angeles with the Carnival Paradise (Inspiration) and Splendor.

      Ohhh BOOO!!

We are taking our first cruise out of SD to Vancouver in April and were hoping to replace our home port of Long Beach. Carnival always has something up it's sleeve...maybe we'll get a brand new ship?  hmmmm.....

Earlier this year, Carnival announced that they were pulling completely out of San Diego after the Spirit is repositioned full-time to Australia, but they are rumored to be putting another Spirit-class ship in her place for the Mexican Riviera, Alaska and Hawaiian itineraries.  The Inspiration will swap itineraries and home ports with the Paradise, the Splendor will stay put.  Perhaps the ship that replaces the Spirit will use the Long Beach and San Pedro cruise terminals as it's West Coast home port(s) if Carnival does end up pulling completely out of San Diego, but I am aware of no recent updates on that.

I've sailed on Carnival ships out of San Diego, Long Beach, and San Pedro terminals.  We can do without the San Pedro Terminal.  We like San Diego because we can take the Amtrak down and walk two blocks to the ship.

The rumor of a Spirit class ship makes sense, because it is narrow enough to go through the Panama Canal.  It's also small enough for the tight places in Alaska.  On the other hand, placing a Conquest class ship on the West Coast would involve another cruise around South America.
