I just got back from vacation doing a back-to-back cruise on the Carnival Breeze. January 4 - 19. This was our 2nd and 3rd cruise with Carnival. Our first cruise with Carnival was on the Freedom in January of 2012 before the "Fun 2.0" upgrade was done. Let me say that even though the Freedom was an "older" ship and had not gone through the transformation yet, we had such a blast for our first cruise! The shows were great, funny, and they were every night.
We were so thrilled that we brought my parents along on the first Carnival Breeze cruise that departed from Miami on January 4th. This was their first cruise as well. We all really enjoyed the updated ship, the restaurants were phenomenal! I don't eat meat, but I loved the hand cut fries at the burger joint, the burrito bar was amazing, and the Italian restaurant for only $12 was a great steal since you could order multiple entrees!
However, I could tell that Carnival made MAJOR cuts to their shows and theater department. Sometimes there wasn't even a show after dinner some nights! I couldn't believe it. My partner took a behind the scenes tour of the boat as an excursion and the tour guide even told him that Carnival made cuts from the theater staff; 16 staff, down to 8 (4 guys and 4 girls.)
For the three shows they did have (The Divyas, The Brits, and I can't remember the third show) they were extremely lacking major theater items. Get this, Carnival no longer even uses real props anymore. instead, they have LCD screens in the background and just use that as props. What the heck? For a brand new boat I would have expected the same entertainment as the Freedom, or better. I would have much rather gone back on an older boat this time and got better entertainment than be on a brand new boat with major cut backs in the theater/entertainment department.
On the nights Carnival didn't have shows after dinner, they would have Bingo and the Hasbro game show. A.) Bingo costs money. You can tell Carnival is trying to recoup money. B.) Hasbro game show. If you didn't want either of those, your only option for the night is to go to sit at a bar and listen to live music.
I think Hasbro is a good idea to have on board for families during the day, but do NOT make cuts to the main evening attractions which is live shows with a full cast and REAL props, not just LCD screens. The props got so bad that during the Brits show they had some English cartoon character singing on the LCD screen for a while.
We watched one Hasbro game, got up and left. Unless your willing to get up and scream like a little girl, you're not going to get on stage to play. Even if you don't want to go on stage and play, Hasbro was boring to watch. Who wants to sit in the audience and watch a mixture of 5-8 year old kids with a few adults play games on stage? Again, I think Hasbo is fine for families and it's great to see Carnival add more entertainment, but we will not be going on anymore Carnival ships that offer Hasbro since we now know where the cuts came from.
As I talked with other couples on board, they felt the same way. They were board at night time because their two kids were 17 and 19 who had no interest in Hasbro, and the married couple had no interest in watching kids and a couple of adults play games on stage.
Carnival did have live comedy shows a few nights in the comedy club. The only issue with that is if you don't get out of dinner fast enough, you can't get a seat. The night club is too small to fit that may people. You'd have to get there at least 30 minutes - 45 minutes in advance to wait to in line to get a seat. We got to see one comedy show.
I really wanted to book our next cruise on the Carnival sunshine, but after seeing that the Sunshine will have the Hasbro game show, we're probably be going to go with another cruise line for now.
I know this Hasbro game show is new to Carnival, and I'm writing this feedback in hopes that they read it and know others are feeling the same way! Maybe just make a few tweaks, bring back the full theater cast, and hopefully we'll be back in the future on a Carnival boat that has Hasbro game show!
Let this be a warning for all future Carnival cruisers, if you're looking for theater entertainment every night after dinner, I'd strongly steer you away from any Carnival boats that currently have Hasbro on them!
