Is it true that Carnival is getting rid of the Calypso bands/music on board? How can that be? We're in their "back-yard" and need to hear their music. I can listen to pipe music and DJ music at home on my radio. When cruising the Caribbean....I want to hear Calypso music!!!!

Actually, they were never calypso.  They were reggae.

It wouldn't surprise me if this is true because when we were on the Destiny in 2010, we were told from the "entertainment staff" that they are doing so many cut backs that each of them are worried about their jobs.  But they at that point had made many cut backs with them already and she said they all know that many more are to come.  So this wouldn't surprise me.

But like you...I hope this isn't true because it's the best part of cruising the Carribbean!   :)

The Lido Deck bands are now two piece combos, usually guitar and keyboard with drum processor and other assorted music gadgets.

I love the Caribbean music.  I sure hope it doesn't go anywhere either.

I have to say that was the one thing that drove my husband over the edge.   Not to be mean, and it didn't bother me, but in all reality, it is like they are playing the same song over and over and over and over and over...  jus sayin

Not that I want anyone to be layed off

I would rather see Carnival cut back on their nightly shows( revues) ,in favor of bringing back the 5 piece reggae bands of the past. In the good old days these bands would show up everywhere, sometimes in port. Nothing like a sail away party with a traditional Reggae Band putting everyone in a festive mood. IMHO dance bands are the way to go. If you need to make cuts, why not start with the Tired Legends Show that has ran it's course........... just saying

      .Celebration 1989 ,Fantasy 2000 & 2002,Pride 2010 &2011 .,Miracle booked May 2012

Ditto.  Kool Runnings was a really fun reggae band.  They were on the Victory in 2006 & 2007 when I was on board.   Liberty 2011 Kool Runnings was on board, but now only a two piece duo with the different music processors.  Not nearly as much fun as when they were a band of five with "Pat the Great" singing.
