Drive from the port, along the ‘Malecon’, passing by the new town and residential areas.
- Learn about the ancient cultures of this coastal town.
- Visit the Archaeological Museum of Central Bank. Featuring pre-Columbian artifacts this archaeological permanent exposition shows “gestures engraved in the face”, which comprehends a space that chronologically illustrates the cultural background of the region, where you will observe the traces of pre-Colombian cultures
- Continue on for approximately 45 minutes past the coast and into the country to the small village of El Aromo. Stop at a small local house here, where you will see the process of the “Paja Toquilla” raw material, used to make the famous Panama hats. You will also have an option to buy.
- Next, you will enjoy Montecristi, about 50 minutes away, a picturesque village which, since colonial times, has been a handicraft centre and the birthplace of the Panama hat which is still produced in small family-run home industries.
- Enjoy a short stop at Chorillo where handicrafts are made with Yute.
- Then, a short orientation around the main square of Montecristi to see the church, the statue of Elroy Alfaro, a former President of Ecuador or also some free time to shop.
Note: Comfortable shoes are recommended due to steps, cobblestones and uneven ground. The guided visit of the Archaeological Museum will be on the first floor only.
