Partner of the Month
The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to preventing and eliminating the disease through research, education, advocacy, and service.
Each year, an estimated 11,031 people in Miami-Dade and more than 113,400 people across Florida will be diagnosed with cancer. The American Cancer Society is the one place they can turn 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We are dedicated to saving lives and creating more birthdays by helping people stay well and get well, and by finding cures and fighting back.
The Dade Unit of the American Cancer Society has established a partnership with Carnival Cruise Lines and the Florida Division’s Reaching Out to Cancer Kids (R.O.C.K.) Camp. Established in 1976, R.O.C.K. Camp is the first camp for children with cancer in the United States. R.O.C.K. Camp is one of three American Cancer Society R.O.C.K. Programs in Florida. The other programs are Families R.O.C.K. Weekend and R.O.C.K. College Scholarships.
R.O.C.K. Camp in Partnership with Camp Boggy Creek, located in Eustis, Florida provides up to 280 children with cancer an opportunity to experience the fun and adventure of summer camp without feeling different from other children. While in a safe environment, children enjoy all the traditional camp activities, including canoeing, swimming, music, arts and crafts, archery, sports, fishing, talent shows and campfires.
Through this partnership, Carnival has provided backpacks filled with goodies to all the kids attending R.O.C.K. Camp from South Florida for the past four years. Last year, thanks to Carnival’s generosity and those of donors across the state of Florida, 288 campers from Florida attended R.O.C.K. Camp. 36 of these campers were from the South Florida.
This year, Carnival is exclusively underwriting R.O.C.K. Camp and Families R.O.C.K. Weekend for kids and families attending from Miami-Dade and Broward.
Families R.O.C.K. weekend is an educational retreat for children with cancer, their parents and siblings. A child’s cancer diagnosis affects the entire family. At Families R.O.C.K. Weekend, children with cancer and their parents and siblings come together to learn, share and have fun. By the end of the weekend, families don’t feel as alone in their battle against cancer. Parents learn more about their child’s cancer from medical professionals and children learn to better cope with cancer and its treatment. Anticipated Families R.O.C.K. Weekend outcomes range from increased compliance with treatment methods to enhancements to their quality of life.
The 2012 R.O.C.K, Camp will be held on June 26-July 2 and July 24-30. There are two, week-long sessions. Children from South Florida, Tampa and St. Petersburg attend June 26-July 2. Children from North Florida and the Orlando area attend July 24-30. Families R.O.C.K. Weekend will be held the weekend of October 26-28 at the Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando.
Our volunteers and supporters such as Carnival Cruise Lines make a major impact around the globe, across the nation, and throughout Florida, including right here in the Miami-Dade/Monroe and Broward. To learn more about the American Cancer Society and R.O.C.K. Programs please visit cancer.org.
