We're sailing the Sensation departing 11/16 and will be in Freeport from 8am to 4pm.  It's just me and Mom, we're thinking a little shopping in the morning and a little beach in the afternoon.  This is our first cruise, and I'm a little confused about how the beaches work.  Do we have to basically buy our way onto a hotel's beach to get sun and sand?  And how far are the beaches from the ship?  Is it plausible to do some light shopping in the AM, return to the boat to drop off our purchases and grab a quick lunch, then hit the beach?  Also, what beaches are there to choose from?  And, finally, is there anyplace I can look online that would answer all the beachy noob questions I have? :D

These are good questions that I'd like the answer to as well.  I would suggest you post it under "First-time Cruisers" forum.  The veteran cruisers are really good about answering questions there.

We are doing Carnivals shore excursion in Freeport-The Jukanoo Beach Party.  We get lunch, beach and entertaiment.  There is not too much shopping in Freeport.  The last time we were there we paid a Taxi $25 for and island tour which was depressing due to homes being messed up because of Charlie(this was in 2006)   when we went, it was really a ghetto.  Then he took us to a Flee Market type place and that's where we shopped.  That part was cool but I could have passed up on the island tour part.  Shopping is cool in Nassau though, places right near the pier so if you do an excursion there, you can shop before or after it right near the pier.  Hope this helps.

We visited Freeport and Nassau in Jan 07 and enjoyed Freeport ALOT better than Nassau.  In Freeport, we did a meet and greet with dolphins.  No swimming is required.  The dolphins swim right up to you and allow you to pet them.  They also do some tricks while their trainers tell you a little more about them.  The water was a little nippy, but was well worth the experience!  The dolphin excursion place was at the Port Lucuya Marketplace, so we shopped after the trip before taking a taxi back to the ship.  Don't forget to buy a spiked coconut drink (in the actual coconut) at the marketplace.  Just a nice experience to remember.  Also, the colorful village of gift shops at the pier had the only conch shell horns that I saw the entire trip.  My kids really enjoyed them.

Enjoy your trip!
