Let me just start by saying that this had nothing to do with carnival. This place is like being in the middle of  nowhere. Nothing really to do or see unless you take a taxi into town and go to the beach that was fun . I don't really know why the ships even stop on this island. My advice would be to take your shore excurision on this island or you will be board out of your mind..

My husband and I went on our honeymoon to Freeport and Nassau on the Fantasy and had a great time!!  In Freeport we did the glassbottom boat excursion and swam in the most amazing pool  and rode jetskis.  We had a wonderful time.

I totally agree! We went to this Island because our propellor on the ship needed to be repaired. We were supposed to go to Grand Cayman and Ochos Rios. Not only was I upset that our itinarary changed but than we were in this dump for 3 days!!! YUCK!

I still went back to Carnival last year and cruised and have already booked my next one for October. I will NEVER willingly go to Freeport! BORING :(

i think it comes down to whether or not you choose a shore excurision in this port.  my boyfriend and i went last february and had a great time!  we did the catamaran & snorkel combo!  we enjoyed the snorkeling in freeport 10 times more than in grand cayman (and grand caymen's supposed to be known for their reefs).  after our excursion you strolled the marketplace and ate lunch at one of the local establishments.  then we went to one of the local because (across from the market...we saw people walking in this direction with beach gear and decided to check out where they were coming/going from since it wasn't apparent whether or not there was a beach in the vacinity (with public access)) anyways, there was and we hung out at the beach for an hour or so before taking the bus back to the port.  your bus ticket is good anytime that day to return to the port, so i suggest walking around the area before heading back (assuming you take a shore excursion).  freeport is one of my favorite cruise ports though!  i think the people who spoke badly didn't explore all the port had to offer!

I must say that many cruisers do get that feeling.... BUT the island is wonderful and what the problem is is that cruise ships dock at the industrial terminal because that is all that will handle their size.  It is near nothing and a taxi is required to get to anthing "touristy". I have stayed on the island several times in different places and have found it to be a great place with really nice people.  I would recommend the Westin/Sheraton complex anytime and the same with the AI Viva Fortuna.  If your ship is in port more that 4-5 hours take a taxi to the Our Lucaya area and have a great time... casino/beach/food/bars/etc.

 I agree.

I much prefer Nassau over Freeport.

Been to Freeport twice and if I never go again, will be great with me.

Last time made the mistake of doing the Viva Wyndham Fortuna excursion----huge waste of money for a nasty place.  Carnival did refund 50%  cost of our family of 5, for which I was hoping for 100% refund.

If I go on a cruise that goes to Freeport------I will stay ON THE SHIP that day. LOL

Can I ask exactly what problems you had with the Viva Wyndham? I have booked this excursion for our cruise in June and now I am worried.

Thanks so much!

Heather c,

Which snorkel trip did you do?  Was it the 2.5 hour or 4.5 hour excursion.  We are trying to decide which one to book.  Also do you know if anyone used shoretrip.com to book?  Thanks.

I will say that Free Port totally blows. The docking area is a dump. After getting a taxi to the town it was ok. The beach is nice if you did not have people coming to you every 5 minutes asking you to buy something. I have been there 3 times in the past 2 years on cruises and that was 3 times to many. I wonder why Carnival does not go to its private island more? Or maybe Key West I would like to go there.

Keep on cruising!!!
