I wanted to know every specific detail and I definitely didn\u2019t want to be the person who walks around looking lost the entire trip. I really wanted to make the most of my vacation. For some this is silly\u2014but for others (and you know who you are!), planning is part of the fun of traveling.<\/p>\n<p>One of my biggest focuses was food &amp; beverages. I\u2019m not ashamed to admit that I love to eat (and drink!). For me, it\u2019s a big part of the vacation experience.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years I\u2019ve racked up some tips that may be useful if you\u2019re planning your first cruise\u2014or even better, have your first cruise booked. Here\u2019s a list of a few food &amp; beverage tips and tricks that I\u2019ve taken advantage of on one of my favorite cruise lines, <a href=\"http:\/\/carnival.com?cid=So_CM_NA_P_AWG#9_1115&amp;DMP=5019,6120,7036,,8003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carnival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1524 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG1.jpg\" alt=\"MM_Post8_IMG1\" width=\"456\" height=\"648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG1.jpg 456w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG1-211x300.jpg 211w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dining room etiquette \u2013<\/strong> If you\u2019re a cruise newbie you\u2019ve probably heard the rumors: You can order as much as you\u2019d like in the dining room! Can\u2019t decide between two entr\u00e9es? (Surf &amp; Turf night gets me every time!) \u2014 go for it! Your server won\u2019t bat an eye. That\u2019s the beauty of cruising. Now, I\u2019m still mindful of the quantity as I do not encourage waste, but this is the time to try something new if you see a selection that\u00a0interests\u00a0you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1525 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG2.jpg\" alt=\"MM_Post8_IMG2\" width=\"616\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG2.jpg 616w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cookies and milk \u2013<\/strong> One of my daughter\u2019s favorite cruise routines is ordering cookies and milk from room service before bed. It\u2019s completely complimentary (though I would recommended extending a tip) and a great way to wind down after a fun day at sea.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cheese plate to go \u2013<\/strong> On the dessert menu in the dining room there is a cheese plate featured along with the nightly selection of desserts. I\u2019m often too stuffed after dinner to order dessert (minus the occasional chocolate melting cake!). However, we often ask for cheese plate to go to take back to the stateroom, or another lounge for after-dinner cocktails. <em>So far, the cheese plate has never gone to waste!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1526 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG3.jpg\" alt=\"MM_Post8_IMG3\" width=\"616\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG3.jpg 616w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bring a\u00a0bottle of wine onboard \u2013<\/strong> Carnival Cruise Line allows each adult guest to carry on 1 bottle of wine or champagne during embarkation. My husband and I usually take one bottle of each and have mimosas on our balcony with breakfast (OJ ordered from room service), and we\u2019ll share the wine before dinner in the same fashion. FYI,\u00a0if you bring this wine into the dining room there will be a corkage fee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wine packages \u2013<\/strong> Alternately, if you\u2019re flying in for your cruise, or don\u2019t want the hassle of carrying on bottles of wine, multi-bottle wine packages are available for purchase in advance or during your cruise. One of the greatest advantages of these packages is that you don\u2019t need to drink the full bottle each night at dinner. Your server will\u00a0happily cork the bottle, store it safely, and then bring it to you the next evening.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1527 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG4.jpg\" alt=\"MM_Post8_IMG4\" width=\"616\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG4.jpg 616w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG4-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Drink packages \u2013<\/strong> One of the newer developments at Carnival is the <em>Cheers!<\/em> bar beverage program. For a flat price, based on the length of cruise, guests can enjoy a variety of wine, beer and spirits, up to a 15-drink maximum per day. If you plan on having multiple beverages a day (at approx. $10 each), the plan can be quite a savings! Packages also include soft drinks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1528 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG5.jpg\" alt=\"MM_Post8_IMG5\" width=\"616\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG5.jpg 616w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/MM_Post8_IMG5-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Free Lemonade &amp; Iced Tea (and water too!) <\/strong>\u2013 One of the things I remember wondering before my first cruise was if I there was any complimentary beverages other than water. The good news is there is! Lemonade and Iced Tea flow freely on the Lido Deck and in the dining rooms. If you\u2019re feeling extra fancy you can mix both the lemonade and iced tea to make an Arnold Palmer <em>(Please tell me I\u2019m not the only one who does this!)<\/em>. Of course, water is available too\u2014 and it\u2019s perfectly safe to drink. Bring a refillable water bottle to save on trips to the Lido Deck.    <form action=\"\" class=\"learn-more-form\">\n        <h2 class=\"learn-more-form--title\">Plan a getaway<\/h2>\n        <label for=\"destination\">Where to<\/label>\n        <select id=\"ddl-destination\" name=\"destination\" class=\"wLarge\" aria-label=\"destination\" title=\"destination\">\n          <option value=\"any\">Any Destination<\/option>\n        <\/select>\n        <label for=\"depart\">From where<\/label>\n        <select id=\"ddl-port\" name=\"port\" class=\"wLarge\" aria-label=\"port\" title=\"port\">\n          <option value=\"any\">Any Departure Port<\/option>\n        <\/select>\n        <label for=\"duration\">How long<\/label>\n        <select id=\"ddl-duration\" name=\"duration\" class=\"wNormal\" aria-label=\"duration\" title=\"duration\">\n            <option value=\"any\">Any Cruise Length<\/option>\n        <\/select>\n        <input id=\"SearchCruise\" type=\"submit\" class=\"submit button\" value=\"Explore\">\n    <\/form>\n  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Lunch in the dining room \u2013<\/strong> Most cruisers rush to the Lido Deck for a buffet lunch on embarkation day, but a little known fact is the dining room is also open during lunchtime. When we choose this option, there is usually only a handful of guests dining with us. <em>The best part?<\/em> Never having to wait for a table.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The\u00a0Chef\u2019s Table \u2013<\/strong> On select <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/cruise-ships.aspx?cid=icp_ships_awg_04242015_10fbtcc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cruise ships<\/a> there is an option for dinner at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnival.com\/cruise-food\/chefs-table?cid=So_CM_NA_P_AWG#9_1115&amp;DMP=5019,6120,7036,,8003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Chef\u2019s Table<\/a>. Now, I haven\u2019t had the chance to attend this VIP experience, but it\u2019s on my list for a future cruise. The dinner starts with a tour of the galley followed by cocktails and hors d\u2019oeuvres, and then a multi-course feast, prepared by a master chef. The menu is also unique to the experience. I think this would make a fantastic evening to celebrate a special occasion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Steakhouse selections in the dining room<\/strong> \u2013 Carnival\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnival.com\/cruise-food\/steakhouse?cid=So_CM_NA_P_AWG#9_1115&amp;DMP=5019,6120,7036,,8003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steakhouse<\/a> is truly one of the best restaurants at sea. I\u2019ve dined there at least 10 times and I\u2019ve never had a bad meal. My husband and I have often joked that we would eat there every night if we could \u2026 well, now we feasibly could with Steakhouse Selections in the dining room. For a $20 surcharge, anyone can upgrade their meal to include a 9-ounce filet mignon, a 1.5-pound Maine lobster, a 14-ounce New York strip steak, or surf and turf.
