Although, while on board, you\u2019ll never be truly lost. You can find a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/cruise-ships.aspx?cid=icp_ships_awg_08272019_gcst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deck plan<\/a> of each vessel so you can get to know it before your trip in the comfort of your home. Until then, here\u2019s a crash course in ship architecture.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bow: <\/strong>The bow is the front of the ship.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bridge: <\/strong>The bridge is the location from which the captain steers the ship.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Galley: <\/strong>A galley is a ship\u2019s kitchen. On a cruise ship, there are many galleys.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gangway: <\/strong>The gangway is the ramp or staircase that you\u2019ll use to embark or disembark the ship.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Helm: <\/strong>The helm is the area of the bridge on which the steering wheel is located and used by the crew only<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Hull: <\/strong>The hull is the outside of the ship.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keel: <\/strong>The keel is the ship\u2019s bottom center.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leeward: <\/strong>The side of the ship where you\u2019ll feel most sheltered from wind is leeward.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lido: <\/strong>Lido is an often-used term because it\u2019s the deck where you\u2019ll find the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/onboard\/pools?cid=icp_oba_awg_08272019_gcst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outdoor pools<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Midship: <\/strong>This is the middle of the ship.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Port: <\/strong>The left side of the ship as it\u2019s facing forward is called port. For men, that includes slacks, khakis, jeans, dress shorts and collared sport shirts. Women wear casual dresses and skirts, pants, capri pants, dressy shorts and dressy jeans.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cruise elegant: <\/strong>This is the one or two nights on a cruise where it\u2019s suggested you wear evening wear to dinner in the main dining room and some other restaurants. For men, that means dress slacks, dress shirts and sport coats (optional). For women, it&#8217;s cocktail dresses, fancier pant suits or skirts. In restaurants, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/cruise-food\/steakhouse?cid=icp_dining_awg_08272019_gcst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steakhouse<\/a>, you will be required to wear tasteful attire.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Formal night: <\/strong>There are two formal, or elegant, nights on longer cruises. Elegant nights mean formal suits and ties or tuxedos for men and evening gowns for women. You may hear the captain discussing knots with another crew member.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Knot: <\/strong>A unit of speed at which ships travel, which is one nautical mile per hour.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mooring: <\/strong>A place where a ship is tied, such as the dock when in port.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wake: <\/strong>The trail of water created at the back (stern) of the ship as it moves forward in the water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s perfectly fine if you forget your cruise-speak and just say \u201cmeet me at the room,\u201d instead of stateroom, or \u201cwhere\u2019s customer service?\u201d instead of asking to see the purser. On a Carnival cruise, you can just be yourself and learn at your leisure.
