Its roots go back to the Aztec civilization, so you could say that it \u201cstarted\u201d 3,000 years ago in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/travel\/minding-mayans-tulum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ancient Mexico<\/a>!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Aztecs believed that the dead would have to make a difficult journey through the afterlife to reach their final resting place, so some of their rituals involved leaving out food to help them along the way. This ancient belief is now a part of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D\u00eda De Los Muertos <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celebrations today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The holiday is also influenced by European-Spanish customs. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/cruise-to\/europe-cruises\/seville-cadiz-cruises.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain<\/a>, All Souls Day was celebrated by putting candles and flowers on family members\u2019 graves, and that same tradition made its way to Mexico.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D\u00eda de los Muertos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s believed that the spirits of dead relatives are able to travel back to earth and reunite with their families for 24 hours. But there\u2019s more to the celebrations!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For one, offerings to the dead are placed on altars called \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ofrendas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d where you\u2019ll see candles, colorful flags, and pictures of the dead. There\u2019s even a special, sweet \u201cbread of the dead\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pan de muerto<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which is often decorated with icing to resemble bones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The favorite foods and drinks of those that have passed are also included. It\u2019s tradition to memorialize the good things, but also lightly mock the person with comedy and absurdity to help keep things light.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contrary to popular depictions, parades haven\u2019t traditionally been part of this holiday as it\u2019s so family-focused.
