{"id":270,"date":"2015-02-07T02:27:24","date_gmt":"2015-02-07T02:27:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/awaywego-origin.carnival.com\/?p=270"},"modified":"2017-10-05T14:43:14","modified_gmt":"2017-10-05T14:43:14","slug":"helpful-tips-making-cruise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/cruising-fun\/how-to-plan\/helpful-tips-making-cruise","title":{"rendered":"Helpful Tips For Making The Most Of Your Cruise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">I just got back from a <a href=\"http:\/\/carnival.com\/?cid=So_CM_NA_P_AWG#14_1120&amp;DMP=5019,6120,7036,,8003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carnival\u00a0cruise<\/a> and have a whole list of notes of things I want to remember to bring next time, as well as a few things I brought along that I now know I can\u2019t live without.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><!--[random_promoted_video\/]--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If you\u2019re headed out on a cruise soon, here\u2019s are some helpful tips for packing and planning to make the most out of your vacation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>PACKING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Pack A Lanyard<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You know all those of those lanyards you get at conventions and meetings that you don\u2019t know what to do with?\u00a0 Bring one on your cruise!\u00a0 Even if you don\u2019t have a lanyard at home, they sell them on board in the gift shop.\u00a0 Everything from sporty ones to blingy ones.\u00a0 It\u2019s useful for carrying your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnival.com\/CMS\/FAQs\/Sail_And_Sign_On_Board_Account.aspx?cid=So_CM_NA_P_AWG#14_1120&amp;DMP=5019,6120,7036,,8003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sail\u00a0&amp;\u00a0Sign<\/a> card when you\u2019re walking around the ship.\u00a0 We brought a hole punch for ours, but after cruising I discovered it would be better to have a lanyard with one of those clear plastic pouches so that way you can add your driver\u2019s license too for ID when getting on and off the ship in ports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" style=\"line-height: 1.5;\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/8d2d82bdfdc2a5305967510a60e391e3\" alt=\"test\" width=\"491.57034220532313\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Pack Extra Conditioner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There are no 3 ounce liquid restrictions on a cruise like there are when flying <em>(though, if you\u2019re flying in for your cruise, you\u2019ll have to put these in your checked luggage).<\/em>\u00a0 While this tip might just be for the ladies, I have to say, the one thing I wish I had more of was extra hair conditioner. The ocean wind, sun, and salt water all take a toll on long locks, so I ran out of my 3 ounce conditioner on the third day. They do have some sundries in the gift shop <em>(including conditioner) <\/em>if you forget anything at home.\u00a0 But they\u2019re typically priced at a premium since you\u2019re at sea <em>($5 for White Rain, $14 for Pantene)<\/em> and not a deal like the items you find in the Duty Free shop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Pack A Water Bottle And Travel Coffee Mug<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In the Marketplace on board the ship you\u2019ll find a filtered water machine as well as a coffee, tea, and hot chocolate available 24 hours a day to keep you hydrated and caffeinated. Bring your own water bottle and travel coffee mug to take advantage of the unlimited refills and to make it easy to walk around the ship without spilling your beverage.\u00a0 If you forget your coffee mug, don\u2019t worry, they have a coffee shop on board with specialty coffees too.\u00a0 Be sure to get their coffee card to get a stamp with each purchase toward a free beverage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/d26971d9a2025baacfe02d039b176f1c\" alt=\"test\" width=\"429.33333333333337\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Pack These Must-Haves<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While I included a few packing tips above, here are few more things I recommend bringing to make your vacation even more awesome:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p2\">zip-lock bags for keeping your stuff organized and dry when you\u2019re at the pool or on shore at the beach<\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\">a few sweaters for when it gets a little chilly at night<\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\">note pads for doors and walkie talkies to communicate with your friends and family when your cell phones don\u2019t work at sea<\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\">decorations to personalize your cabin door so you can easily find your room<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">PLANNING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Wake Up To The Sunrise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnival.com\/staterooms.aspx?cid=So_CM_NA_P_AWG#14_1120&amp;DMP=5019,6120,7036,,8003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Choose a stateroom<\/a> that will have the sunrise when you\u2019re headed out to sea, and the sunset when you\u2019re returning home.\u00a0 This can change depending on your route, but for us, it was the port side.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" style=\"line-height: 1.5;\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/368afb7c27669c3c41eb902b7b435c68\" alt=\"test\" width=\"429.33333333333337\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Check Your Cell Coverage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Check with your cell phone carrier to find out what your coverage is in some Caribbean islands.\u00a0 With my cell phone plan, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico were included for data and cell phone usage. If you do use your phone on the islands, don\u2019t forget to turn it off or switch it to airplane mode when you\u2019re back on the ship so you don\u2019t get any extra international charges while at sea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">    <form action=\"\" class=\"learn-more-form\">\n        <h2 class=\"learn-more-form--title\">Plan a getaway<\/h2>\n        <label for=\"destination\">Where to<\/label>\n        <select id=\"ddl-destination\" name=\"destination\" class=\"wLarge\" aria-label=\"destination\" title=\"destination\">\n          <option value=\"any\">Any Destination<\/option>\n        <\/select>\n        <label for=\"depart\">From where<\/label>\n        <select id=\"ddl-port\" name=\"port\" class=\"wLarge\" aria-label=\"port\" title=\"port\">\n          <option value=\"any\">Any Departure Port<\/option>\n        <\/select>\n        <label for=\"duration\">How long<\/label>\n        <select id=\"ddl-duration\" name=\"duration\" class=\"wNormal\" aria-label=\"duration\" title=\"duration\">\n            <option value=\"any\">Any Cruise Length<\/option>\n        <\/select>\n        <input id=\"SearchCruise\" type=\"submit\" class=\"submit button\" value=\"Explore\">\n    <\/form>\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Stay\u00a0on Ship&#8217;s Time<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Depending on your departure port and some cruise itineraries, your ship\u2019s time may change. This can get a little confusing when you go on shore (and if, like me, you check time on your phone instead of wearing a watch), especially if you\u2019re exploring on your own instead of going on a cruise excursion.\u00a0When on board, you can always check the ship&#8217;s time on your stateroom TV. If there&#8217;s a difference between ship&#8217;s time and local time in an upcoming port, it will be noted in the daily Carnival Fun Times, as well as announced repeatedly the night before arriving in port and the morning of arrival and during debarkation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Decorate Your Door &amp; Play Games With Your Towel Animals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">One thing I wish we had done was decorate our door.\u00a0 With a long hallway full of wood paneled doors, it\u2019s not surprising how many times I tried to walk into the wrong room.\u00a0 We saw some really fun decorations done by other passengers that could easily be accomplished with a\u00a0pre-cruise\u00a0trip to the party store. The other nice thing I noticed is they were mostly paper decorations, making them light and easy to pack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/6792e54499ccbb7aee2ffc56dc3c4561\" alt=\"test\" width=\"530.7692307692307\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">We might not have decorated our door, but we did decorate our room with the towel animals, re-posing them with a friendly note to surprise our cabin steward each day.\u00a0 It\u2019s a fun way to show your appreciation for your cabin steward, especially since tips are automatically added to your Sail\u00a0&amp;\u00a0Sign card.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/ee48a97eec2ce14bc6544a4c9033bee5\" alt=\"test\" width=\"429.33333333333337\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Budget For A Special Dining Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While all your food is included with the cruise and 24 hour buffets, pizza, and ice cream still live up to their reputation, the one thing that surprised me the most about cruising on a new ship is the number of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnival.com\/dining?cid=So_CM_NA_P_AWG#14_1120&amp;DMP=5019,6120,7036,,8003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">restaurant options<\/a> on board.\u00a0 We dined at a different location every night, from sushi, to a steakhouse, and even a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnival.com\/cruise-food\/chefs-table?cid=So_CM_NA_P_AWG#14_1120&amp;DMP=5019,6120,7036,,8003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chef\u2019s Table<\/a> experience with a tour of the kitchen and private dining with wine pairings.\u00a0 Most of these upscale\u00a0experiences cost a little extra, but are heavily discounted compared to what you\u2019d pay on shore.\u00a0 For instance, our four course steakhouse dinner was only $35 per person, while something comparable back home in Orlando might be around $80-$100 per person.\u00a0 Take a tour of these on your first night at sea, then make a reservation to treat yourself to a wonderful dining experience. We couldn\u2019t decide on one, so we tried them all\u00a0\u2014\u00a0guess I\u2019m just a foodie at heart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/7b5d57eea46a2b9301b53ae4ec1f96c3\" alt=\"test\" width=\"429.33333333333337\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Splurge On The Spa Without Breaking The Bank<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Each day the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnival.com\/onboard\/spa-carnival?cid=So_CM_NA_P_AWG#14_1120&amp;DMP=5019,6120,7036,,8003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spa<\/a> will run special promotions offering significant discounts on certain spa treatments.\u00a0 However, the one thing that isn\u2019t included with your treatment is access to the relaxation and steam rooms and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnival.com\/onboard\/cloud-9-thermal-suite?cid=So_CM_NA_P_AWG#14_1120&amp;DMP=5019,6120,7036,,8003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thermal Suite<\/a>.\u00a0 A day pass to the spa to use these rooms is only $20 &#8212; definitely go for it.\u00a0 We spent our \u201cDay At Sea\u201d lounging around in the Thermal Suite drifting in and out of a nap while pretending to read a book.\u00a0 It was one of the most relaxing days on our vacation and worth the splurge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/bbc2c30a4db8f81180c2df92cac894af\" alt=\"test\" width=\"429.33333333333337\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A couple of extra tips for the spa:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Most of the rooms are co-ed, so wear your bathing suit and bring the robe from your room.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Bring your iPod and earbuds full of your favorite music or audio books.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Also bring a book, your favorite teas (hot water is provided), and anything else you need to get your relaxation on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><em>This post was created as part of my collaboration with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/carnival.com\/?cid=So_CM_NA_P_AWG#14_1120&amp;DMP=5019,6120,7036,,8003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carnival<\/a>.
