As you know, Matt and I had the pleasure of going on a cruise over New Year&#8217;s as part of my partnership with <a href=\"htp:\/\/carnival.com\/?cid=So_CM_NA_P_AWG#15_1121&amp;DMP=5019,6120,7036,,8003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carnival<\/a>. I\u2019ll be sharing two health-focused recaps from our cruising adventures. First up is this post about how to eat healthy on a cruise. On Thursday, I\u2019ll share how we stayed active while cruising!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/b6d62d1abdac9f470686566c1457cccc\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With the exception of a smoothie and an afternoon iced latte, we ate all of our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnival.com\/dining?cid=So_CM_NA_P_AWG#15_1121&amp;DMP=5019,6120,7036,,8003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meals\/snacks<\/a> on board the cruise ship. Cruises are often known for decadence when it comes to food \u2013 it\u2019s available all day, every day, in unlimited portions, and it\u2019s certainly not all healthy. That said, it is possible to eat healthy while on a cruise ship \u2013 while still enjoying yourself, too! Here\u2019s how I did it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Breakfast<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Breakfast is not usually a time when I am in the mood to indulge, so I take advantage by keeping breakfast on the healthier side. This doesn\u2019t mean restricting calories or portions \u2013 doing that would set you up to fail later on in the day \u2013 just that I aim for a good balance of whole grains, protein, and &#8220;good fat,&#8221; with a focus on real food vs. the more processed or greasy options.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/2a574a8557fb473732e6eaa91ed8b0f0\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Going with intuitive eating, I mixed things up based on what I was in the mood for each morning.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/e6d6cbbf53451c6b818f805bd98ccdc4\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In general, though, my breakfasts involved a mix of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eggs (scrambled with tomato or hard boiled) or in veggie omelette form<\/li>\n<li>Oatmeal (with nuts\/fruit and\/or cottage cheese) or toast<\/li>\n<li>Fruit (the grapefruit was especially delicious \u2013 I don\u2019t eat grapefruit much at home because I\u2019m too lazy to slice it, so I took advantage)<\/li>\n<li>I also had <a href=\"http:\/\/fannetasticfood.spreadshirt.com\/will-run-for-bacon-A5841869\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bacon<\/a> on the first day for good measure \ud83d\ude09<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/5cc15752706e4d2f7b1e586c6b7c14d9\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/4bda6743d64ca8d883f8b936e82b4e4c\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the second half of the trip, I discovered this awesome \u201cNorlander\u201d European-style bread. I must try to make this at home \u2013 I loved it. I had it with peanut butter a fair amount.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/2ea78000834f35228fbb64b0ace1b637\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the days I didn\u2019t have the bread for breakfast, I packed it to have as a late morning or afternoon snack with peanut butter and sometimes banana too.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/7c06d8a5756198d82b5a0d7deb432749\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The inside bag of a cereal box ended up being the perfect size for storing it for later!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/93cfa4ebe0d577a703e5de891241aed8\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lunch <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I kept lunches healthy-ish for the most part as well, again going by what I was in the mood for though. If I was craving something that wasn\u2019t so healthy, I didn\u2019t deny myself. That always backfires later on!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/4a3a5e198215db782b1eeb242bb91cf5\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Carnival had a really nice, big salad bar every day for lunch with a lot of healthy options so all my lunches involved either a big salad as my main dish or a salad as a side to whatever I was more in the mood for.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/59f06fe2649575e1c8551d52c700d51b\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One day I had a salad with a bean\/chicken\/veggie burrito:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/56448e53ce6efd9567cd2f96ba858f21\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another day I was craving a German-style sausage with sauerkraut, so I had that with a big salad:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/3f0f930bd38c47abe8c8d8db20191c5f\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I also enjoyed pizza once for lunch \u2013 they had a really awesome freshly made to order Italian-style (thin crust, super light on the cheese) pizza bar that was open 24\/7. I loved their mushroom variety topped with fresh arugula!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/f46a63463029638c5b3844dcbb256af7\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong> Snacks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not gonna lie \u2013 I definitely enjoyed pizza twice for afternoon snacks! It was so delicious \u2013 and again, there\u2019s no need to eat perfectly all the time, especially when you\u2019re on vacation. I ate veggies when I craved them, and pizza when I craved it too.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/443e416d0abfc00ebdad823e0cee90da\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--[random_promoted_video\/]-->I also had bread and peanut butter and fresh fruit leftover from breakfast for some snacks, as well as some nuts and dried fruit I brought from home.<\/p>\n<p>One of the keys for intuitive eating is to indulge when it\u2019s worth it \u2013 not just because it\u2019s there. For me, afternoon fruity cocktails are totally not worth it \u2013 I usually have a few sips before the sweetness starts to make me feel sick. And I don\u2019t love drinking in the afternoon when I\u2019m in the hot sun, either \u2013 it doesn\u2019t leave me feeling so great. That said, I did enjoy some Prosecco\/wine for happy hour before dinner a few nights once the sun had gone down! It was vacation after all. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/0aa8ef552817c0d82c1b1de6b577e54b\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dinner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dinner was the time when I indulged the most \u2013 although I still made sure to focus on eating slowly and mindfully, and enjoying what I was having. I also didn\u2019t get dessert every single night just because I could \u2013 only when I\u00a0was really in the mood for it (I think I got it 3 or 4 out of the 7 nights \u2013 on the other nights, I had some herbal tea instead). Our favorite was the chocolate melting\u00a0cake \u2013 delicious!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/328597181978c216048f31976c6d22ed\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>    <form action=\"\" class=\"learn-more-form\">\n        <h2 class=\"learn-more-form--title\">Plan a getaway<\/h2>\n        <label for=\"destination\">Where to<\/label>\n        <select id=\"ddl-destination\" name=\"destination\" class=\"wLarge\" aria-label=\"destination\" title=\"destination\">\n          <option value=\"any\">Any Destination<\/option>\n        <\/select>\n        <label for=\"depart\">From where<\/label>\n        <select id=\"ddl-port\" name=\"port\" class=\"wLarge\" aria-label=\"port\" title=\"port\">\n          <option value=\"any\">Any Departure Port<\/option>\n        <\/select>\n        <label for=\"duration\">How long<\/label>\n        <select id=\"ddl-duration\" name=\"duration\" class=\"wNormal\" aria-label=\"duration\" title=\"duration\">\n            <option value=\"any\">Any Cruise Length<\/option>\n        <\/select>\n        <input id=\"SearchCruise\" type=\"submit\" class=\"submit button\" value=\"Explore\">\n    <\/form>\n  Another key with dinner was staying mindful enough to stop when I was comfortably full, not stuffed. This usually meant not finishing all of my appetizer\/meals\/dessert. I always prefer to have a lot of tastes of things, so this worked out well while still leaving me satisfied vs. stuffed.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the nights on the ship we dined in the dining room with our good friends Melli and Mortiz. When I was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fannetasticfood.com\/2014\/08\/26\/hiking-rigi-mountain-near-lucerne-switzerland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in Switzerland this summer with Melli<\/a> (my German friend who I met when we were roommates when I was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fannetasticfood.com\/2011\/09\/23\/throwback-teaching-english-in-prague-czech-republic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teaching English in Prague<\/a>, and have stayed in good touch with since), I discovered that she had just booked a cruise with her husband right at the same time that we were looking. I was so excited that we were able to get on the same cruise! Getting to spend time with them was so much fun and such a sweet bonus.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/4ecd0375436d6de889073790c1eb9660\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had a really fun waiter named Rolie from the Philippines who took very good care of us. We were sad to say goodbye to him on the last night! (And yes, my face is bright red \u2013 my rosacea does not love the sun like I do.)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/0f546b7a1cdaf837a0bf843a5cde5904\" alt=\"test\" width=\"395.83439490445863\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One nice thing about the dining room menus was that they had \u201chealthy options\u201d noted with a heart symbol next to them. I ordered a few of those options on nights I was in the mood for something lighter!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/9f18deaccac33bd4ca8f47b57ed9fcd9\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The only thing I didn\u2019t love was that the \u201chealthy\u201d dessert options were made with artificial sweeteners \u2013 yuck. Real dessert or no dessert, thank you!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/78ee843113f4701b57583c3b6033ae66\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My favorite meal in the dining room was the broiled lobster and shrimp they had one night \u2013 soooo good.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/42a0a4b43540a8139e8681df1b688951\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although this lamb was a close second:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/4a89d0cdd115382c3c83860810012e09\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We also went to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnival.com\/cruise-food\/steakhouse?cid=So_CM_NA_P_AWG#15_1121&amp;DMP=5019,6120,7036,,8003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">steakhouse<\/a> (which requires a special booking and an extra fee) for dinner one night, just the two of us \u2013 the food was PHENOMENAL. Seriously among the best dinners I\u2019ve had. Fancy and fun atmosphere, too! I had the tuna tartare and the surf and turf \u2013 so good. No dessert, just tea for both of us \u2013 we were more than satisfied after all this good food!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/79a309d3e1772a0d9b40431ac0b35615\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/5194986cf283071e7dd6d45dc1bb7940\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.newscred.com\/d99bea142f291ea6c9d4c9080bbaba05\" alt=\"test\" width=\"428.8916323731139\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So \u2013 there you have it! I always believe that being healthy means not ALWAYS being healthy, so this post about eating healthy of course needed to include some indulgence, too. I\u2019ll close with a few main takeaways that are applicable not only when on a cruise ship, but in normal life, too:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Indulge when it\u2019s worth it and you are really in the mood to, not just because you can\/it\u2019s there<\/li>\n<li>Enjoy what you are eating\/drinking \u2013 savor it and eat\/drink slowly<\/li>\n<li>Pay attention to fullness cues, stopping when you are satisfied, not stuffed<\/li>\n<li>Load up on veggies when you can<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t feel guilty for indulging if you\u2019ve decided it\u2019s worth it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Have you ever been on a cruise?
