{"id":2847,"date":"2015-08-12T15:21:09","date_gmt":"2015-08-12T15:21:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/awaywego-origin.carnival.com\/?p=2847"},"modified":"2017-10-04T16:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-10-04T16:00:00","slug":"gold-leaf-coral-frame-tutorial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/lifestyle\/diy\/gold-leaf-coral-frame-tutorial","title":{"rendered":"Gold Leaf Coral Frame Tutorial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Who doesn&#8217;t love combing through the soft beach sand, where the shore meets the water, and coming up with hands full of sea treasures?<\/p>\n<p>Leyna and I spent hours doing this on our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnival.com\/shore-excursions?cid=So_CM_NA_P_AWG#28_1497&amp;DMP=5019,6120,7046,,8003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carnival cruise excursions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2852\" src=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG1.jpg\" alt=\"BR_Post4_IMG1\" width=\"616\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG1.jpg 616w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Carnival asked me to write about bringing our vacation home with us, and I knew this tutorial was the perfect fit.\u00a0 Why should those bits of coral and shells be destined to a life in a dark closet (or the trash, honestly)?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2855\" src=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG21.jpg\" alt=\"BR_Post4_IMG2\" width=\"616\" height=\"621\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG21.jpg 616w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG21-298x300.jpg 298w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All you need for this are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A picture frame<\/li>\n<li>*CLEAN pieces of coral that have washed ashore, or shells<\/li>\n<li>Hot glue gun\/glue sticks<\/li>\n<li>Mod Podge<\/li>\n<li>Sponge brush<\/li>\n<li>Clean and dry fine bristle brush<\/li>\n<li>Package of gold leaf sheets (don&#8217;t let this throw you, it&#8217;s not expensive &#8211; about $8\/package)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>*Guys, don&#8217;t go breaking off live coral, okay? There&#8217;s plenty to be found that&#8217;s dead and dried up along the shoreline.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2856\" src=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG3.jpg\" alt=\"BR_Post4_IMG3\" width=\"616\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG3.jpg 616w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Start by arranging all your pieces on your frame how you think they will best fit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2857\" src=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG4.jpg\" alt=\"BR_Post4_IMG4\" width=\"616\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG4.jpg 616w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG4-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then carefully remove a couple pieces, hot glue them back down, and repeat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2858\" src=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG5.jpg\" alt=\"BR_Post4_IMG5\" width=\"616\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG5.jpg 616w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG5-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dilute your Mod Podge with about 40% water, then apply over the pieces, really soaking them. The coral will drink up a lot. It&#8217;s probably wise to make sure you&#8217;ve removed the backing and glass from the frame by this point.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2859\" src=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG6.jpg\" alt=\"BR_Post4_IMG6\" width=\"616\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG6.jpg 616w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG6-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let it dry for about 5 minutes. You want the pieces to be tacky, not wet.<\/p>\n<p>Now rip small pieces of gold leaf and dab it on with your dry, clean, fine bristle brush. Really work it into the crevices, and all that great coral texture.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2860\" src=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG7.jpg\" alt=\"BR_Post4_IMG7\" width=\"616\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG7.jpg 616w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BR_Post4_IMG7-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The gold leaf is crazy delicate and will flake everywhere. Don&#8217;t worry. It wipes up fine. After the gold leaf has had about 10 minutes to dry, you can go back over with a light coat of Mod Podge, then apply another coat of gold leaf if you&#8217;d like.<\/p>\n<p>I wound up doing 2 coats of gold leaf, then a final coat of Mod Podge to seal it. I didn&#8217;t cover the coral in it&#8217;s entirety because I liked the unfinished look.
