As we wrapped up the first year of homeschooling, I found myself increasingly concerned about the possibility of summer learning loss. However, in the days leading up to our trip on the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/a>Carnival Conquest<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for our summer cruise, I set out to answer the question: what does\u00a0homeschooling\u00a0while traveling really look like? With a little creativity, I discovered\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0not only possible\u2014 it can be fun, too.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are 4 easy, hands-on lessons you can\u00a0use\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>homeschool while traveling<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Travel Homeschooling Lesson #1: Government & History Through Real-World Travel<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

This year, I introduced map reading skills which proved to be extremely useful when showing them our trip\u2019s route. Because we were visiting three foreign islands, they learned that passports were needed to travel beyond our countries\u2019 borders. Knowing they would each have their own special document turned a trip to the passport office into a mission. Sailing aboard a Carnival cruise\u00a0<\/span>isn\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0roughing it by any means, but we also talked about the dangers the early settlers faced in navigating rough waters when\u00a0<\/span>sailing to undocumented territories\u2013meaning no buffet, entertainment,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/a>Camp Ocean<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>all of<\/span>\u00a0the wonderful amenities we enjoyed on our journey. Taking the time to acknowledge the history of ships truly highlighted the significance of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>teaching on a cruise ship<\/span><\/span>\u00a0for all of us.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Travel Homeschooling Lesson #2: Learning Through Planes, Buses & Boats<\/span><\/span>

Our ship\u00a0<\/span>departed<\/span>\u00a0from Fort Lauderdale, which meant the kids got to experience their first airplane ride. Again, we used the map in the headrest to navigate our short flight. Once we arrived, we boarded a charter bus which transported us to the port, then we boarded the ship. Car to airplane, airplane to bus, bus to ship; one of the twins pointed out we used four modes of transportation in one day!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Travel Homeschooling Lesson #3: Art History on Carnival Conquest<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

During the school year, the older children took an art history class at a neighborhood art center. Once aboard the ship, they recognized each of the formal dining restaurants, Renoir and Monet, were named for famous artists. Furthermore, original art hung in the halls leading into\u00a0<\/span>Lido<\/span>\u00a0Deck as\u00a0<\/span>well<\/span>\u00a0in the staircases. Because of their\u00a0<\/span>new found<\/span>\u00a0appreciation of art, we always\u00a0<\/span>made time<\/span>\u00a0to stop and\u00a0<\/span>observe<\/span>\u00a0various works before we headed to the next activity.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Travel Homeschooling Lesson #4: Exploring Cultures at Sea<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

The crew members on the Carnival Conquest came from several different\u00a0countries\u00a0yet all had the same mission\u2013 to guarantee that this trip would be the best vacation ever. Everyone was amused at the various accents and dialects spoken though we all spoke English. One crew member\u00a0in particular gave\u00a0them a little history lesson about her native country of Jamaica and shared a photo of her own child.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Navigating the Sea\u2014and Discovering the New World<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Travel Homeschooling Lesson #5: Caribbean History, One Island at a Time<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

With just a few hours in Old<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/a>San Juan, Puerto Rico<\/span><\/span><\/a>, we had time to explore the Castillo San Crist\u00f3bal\u2014 a fort built to protect against land attacks on the city of San Juan. In St. Kitts, we took an<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/a>island excursion<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0which gave us the country\u2019s history as a powerhouse for sugar exporting, got a peek into the plantation owner\u2019s home to get a glimpse of what life was like before running water.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Mom and Dad were able to enjoy an exclusive rum tasting event. Experiencing life on the island helped my city kids to better appreciate nature, both wild animals and flowers, and interact with the hospitable, beautiful people of one of the best summer vacation destinations\u2013 the Caribbean.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Let the destination guide your child’s learning.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Learning while traveling is easier than you think\u2014 try to tie your surroundings into key subjects like history,\u00a0geography\u00a0or culture. Visiting a historic fort? Talk about past battles,\u00a0architecture\u00a0or why\u00a0people built\u00a0forts in the first place. Exploring a street market?\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0a lesson in economics, local\u00a0culture\u00a0and\u00a0maybe even\u00a0foreign languages.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Pack a mini “learning kit” they’ll actually want to use.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
