A serving tray can make moving food and drinks to and from the kitchen so much easier. Even though you can certainly pick up a plain ol&#8217; serving tray at the store, who wants that? This DIY Serving Tray is also inspired by my cruises with Carnival. One of my favorite afternoon activities (I&#8217;m using the word &#8220;activities&#8221; loosely.) is lounging on the lido deck and catching some rays while people watching. Just being out there is a little slice of heaven. What makes it even better is that the wonderful staff come around often to take drink orders and serve beverages. Yes, my friends &#8211; cocktails are delivered right to you &#8211; on a tray. Pure bliss.<\/p>\n<p>Side note: Speaking of Carnival&#8217;s cocktails, you should definitely check out some of their recipes I&#8217;ve recreated at home: Tiramisu Martini, Spicy Chipotle Pineapple Martini, and Carnival Cocktail.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it&#8217;s just me, but serving something on a tray, regardless of what it is, makes it special. Somehow it seems fancier and more luxurious. Not to mention that the tray allows you carry twelve drinks instead of two.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking about my own experiences, I got to work. With some nautical color inspiration, I gathered paint together and made a quick trip to the hardware store for supplies. After an afternoon of painting and a little assembly, I had two new trays ready for entertaining. But then went bold with graphic design. Now, I just need to find someone who will deliver a cocktail to me. Ha!<\/p>\n<p>Let me show you how I made them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4654\" src=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DIY-Serving-Tray-679x1024.jpg\" alt=\"DIY-Serving-Tray-679x1024\" width=\"679\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DIY-Serving-Tray-679x1024.jpg 679w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DIY-Serving-Tray-679x1024-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 679px) 100vw, 679px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To make one tray, you will need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 board (12 x 8 x 1&#8243; &#8211; I found mine precut to these dimensions.)<\/li>\n<li>1 dowel rod (3\/4-inch diameter)<\/li>\n<li>Two handles<\/li>\n<li>Screws (Those that are included with the handles, plus 4 more of the same type, but 1 1\/4&#8243; long.)<\/li>\n<li>Painter&#8217;s table<\/li>\n<li>Paint<\/li>\n<li>Paint brush<\/li>\n<li>Drill and bits<\/li>\n<li>Thick-gel super glue<\/li>\n<li>Ruler<\/li>\n<li>Pencil<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4655\" src=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DIY-serving-tray-supplies-736x1024.jpg\" alt=\"DIY-serving-tray-supplies-736x1024\" width=\"736\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DIY-serving-tray-supplies-736x1024.jpg 736w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DIY-serving-tray-supplies-736x1024-216x300.jpg 216w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 736px) 100vw, 736px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To begin, paint your wood board. I used a simple diagonal pattern that I marked off with painters tape. If you&#8217;re using four colors like I did, you can paint with two of the colors first. Then paint them. Place the handles on the top of the tray and mark through the screw hole with a pencil.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4660\" src=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DIY-serving-tray-9-750x1024.jpg\" alt=\"DIY-serving-tray-9-750x1024\" width=\"750\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DIY-serving-tray-9-750x1024.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DIY-serving-tray-9-750x1024-220x300.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><br \/>\nPredrill the screw holes where you made the marks. If you&#8217;re using a handle that has four holes (like mine), drill all of the way through the board for the two holes that face the center of the board and only about halfway though for the holes at the edge of the board.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4661\" src=\"http:\/\/awaywego.carnival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DIY-serving-tray-10-759x1024.jpg\" alt=\"DIY-serving-tray-10-759x1024\" width=\"759\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DIY-serving-tray-10-759x1024.jpg 759w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DIY-serving-tray-10-759x1024-222x300.jpg 222w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 759px) 100vw, 759px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once your holes are drilled, flip the board over. Repeat on the other side. The screws that come with the handles will go into the outer holes and the longer screws will go into the inner holes.
