It&#8217;s such a thin, little book that I never quite know where to put it. I needed something to make it more substantial and easier to spot, and protect it at the same time. We have one scheduled for 2017, and we couldn&#8217;t be more excited. I booked us on the\u00a0new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/cruise-ships\/carnival-vista.aspx?cid=icp_dcs_awg_inspiredbycharm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carnival Vista<\/a>. (Have you seen the new ship? With their adhesive backing, the two patches can be ironed together. Let me walk you through the steps.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5047\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-No-Sew-Passport-Cover-658x1024.jpg\" alt=\"diy-no-sew-passport-cover-658x1024\" width=\"456\" height=\"710\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-No-Sew-Passport-Cover-658x1024.jpg 456w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-No-Sew-Passport-Cover-658x1024-193x300.jpg 193w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what you will need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mend and repair denim patch kit<\/li>\n<li>12 x 9&#8243; piece of felt<\/li>\n<li>Snap kit<\/li>\n<li>Felt tip marker<\/li>\n<li>Scissors<\/li>\n<li>Hole punch<\/li>\n<li>Iron<\/li>\n<li>Hammer<\/li>\n<li>Passport (as a guide)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For this project, make sure you find a mend and repair denim patch kit that includes two large patches backed with iron-on adhesive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5048\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-1-797x1024.jpg\" alt=\"diy-passport-cover-1-797x1024\" width=\"456\" height=\"586\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-1-797x1024.jpg 456w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-1-797x1024-233x300.jpg 233w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Using one patch as a pattern, trace the shape onto a piece of felt with a felt tip marker. Since you need two of the felt shape, first fold the large piece of felt in half. (This will allow you to cut out both of the shapes at one time.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5049\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-3-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"diy-passport-cover-3-819x1024\" width=\"456\" height=\"570\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-3-819x1024.jpg 456w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-3-819x1024-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, using your passport as a guide, make three marks on the bottom and sides to show where the passport will sit in your pouch. These marks are necessary so you don&#8217;t trim off too much when cutting out the felt.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5078\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-2-1024x650.jpg\" alt=\"diy-passport-cover-2-1024x650\" width=\"616\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-2-1024x650.jpg 616w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-2-1024x650-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now you&#8217;re ready to cut the felt. The top should be trimmed in line with the pattern you traced. For the sides and the bottom, you&#8217;ll want to cut in about a quarter-inch from the line.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see below, doing this allows the adhesive on the sides and bottom of the patches to seal the pouch together. The top will stay open because the felt prevents it from sealing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5079\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-4-1024x623-1.jpg\" alt=\"diy-passport-cover-4-1024x623\" width=\"616\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-4-1024x623-1.jpg 616w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-4-1024x623-1-300x183.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, you&#8217;re ready to iron. Stack the patches so that the two sides with the adhesive are together with the felt in between.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5051\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-5-759x1024.jpg\" alt=\"diy-passport-cover-5-759x1024\" width=\"456\" height=\"615\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-5-759x1024.jpg 456w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-5-759x1024-222x300.jpg 222w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With your iron on the cotton setting (Do not use steam.), iron each area of the cover for 30-45 seconds. Do this on both sides. Pay special attention to the edges to make sure they are bonded.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5052\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-7-778x1024.jpg\" alt=\"diy-passport-cover-7-778x1024\" width=\"456\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-7-778x1024.jpg 456w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-7-778x1024-228x300.jpg 228w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By ironing, you will seal the edges as well as adhere the denim patches to the felt to create a felt pocket.<\/p>\n<p>Next, using a pair of scissors, trim off any overhanging felt or uneven places along the edges of the denim patches.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5053\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-5-759x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"diy-passport-cover-5-759x1024\" width=\"456\" height=\"615\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-5-759x1024-1.jpg 456w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-5-759x1024-1-222x300.jpg 222w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, attach the snaps. Use a hole punch to create a hole in the same spot on both layers of the material in the center about 1\/2-inch down from the top. (I recommend inserting your passport into the pouch to find the best spot so your passport will fit when the snaps are closed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5054\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-9-723x1024.jpg\" alt=\"diy-passport-cover-9-723x1024\" width=\"456\" height=\"646\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-9-723x1024.jpg 456w, https:\/\/www.carnival.com\/awaywego\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DIY-Passport-Cover-9-723x1024-212x300.jpg 212w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the holes have been made, you&#8217;re ready to attach the snaps. (Make sure your kit includes the tools required to attach the snaps.) Follow the instructions on your particular snap kit.
