Experience the results of Kilauea, the world's most active volcano, from its repeated and most recent eruptions.

Departing from the pier, you will travel in an air conditioned van or mini bus through the historic Downtown Hilo to the tranquility of Rainbow Falls. You'll then head to the area of the most recent massive eruption in the Puna area of the Big Island. First stop is the Pahoa Town Transfer Station, which was almost overrun by lava in the 2014 eruption. You'll pass through the town and then head toward Leilani Estates, a populated area that is located directly on the stretch of rift zones for the active volcano, and known for its lava outbreaks. Witness steam still rising beside the highway and steel plates used to cover cracks in the road, with the surrounding forest still showing signs of damage from volcanic gases.

You'll then proceed to Kaimu for a half-mile hike out over the 1992 eruption, to the new black sand beach. Traversing a highly scenic coastline with natural tree tunnels, you'll arrive at a sea arch, which often has Green Sea Turtles seeking algae in the ocean. Returning toward Pahoa, if time permits and depending on volcanic activity, you can either visit the Painted Church and other attractions in the area, or proceed to the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Farm for Ice Cream and gift purchases, then return to the ship via a nearby scenic coastline.

This tour visits areas that are under constant change, and eruptions are considered paused not over. Some additional short hikes may open, while others may close. Your tour guide will stay constantly on alert for opportunities to get your group to the most scenic and interesting sights. Should a major eruption occur, there is another version of this tour that heads inland to take advantage of a new scenic highway. Be assured that your guide will always take you to areas cleared by USGS and Civil Defense.
