Connected with Central America’s largest protected rainforest, there is a magical place called Veragua Rainforest, a wondrous 3,400-acre mountain reserve which National Geographic Traveler called “The Cream of the Cream of the Rainforest”.
On your drive up to the mountains, you will pass through several charming towns, where you will get a closer look at rural Caribbean life in Costa Rica. In less than one hour, you will find yourself immersed in the breathtaking and vibrant rainforest with amazing panoramic views.
Your nature experience begins immediately as our professional guides explain everything you need to know before you start the effortless and educational tour. Our guides will lead you through an up-close visit to a live snake exhibition (don’t worry, they are behind a glass!) where you will stroll on easily-accessible trails while enjoying the sights and sounds of the authentic rainforest around you. You will then enter our state-of-the-art open air sky gondola system that will take you on an enchanting ride through the rainforest canopy. As you pass by humongous 300-year-old trees on the way down to the riverbank, you will be surrounded by uninterrupted views of the virgin rainforest of the largest park in Central America, the “Parque Nacional La Amistad” or Friendship Park, with over 355-thousand acres of untouched land. Keep an eye out for toucans and shy sloths, and listen for howler monkeys as you descend the mountain to the riverbank below.
Upon reaching the river, you will be able to disembark and enjoy a walk through the Trail of the Giants alongside the Victoria River. This trail was named for the gigantic trees that line it, and have watched over the river for centuries. The expedition into the depths of the virgin rainforest is capped off with a visit to the magnificent two-tiered, 20 meter ‘Puma waterfall’.
Your adventure continues with a ride back through the rainforest canopy on your gondola and culminates in a visit to the biological research station, home of the Foundation for Rainforest Research. Here you will meet our dedicated research scientists and may even be lucky enough to witness the discovery of a new plant or animal species! Tropical seasonal fruit, fresh juice or purified water will be served at the Veragua Rainforest Café, and free time will be given to visit the gift shop, stocked with a variety of Costa Rican art and creative remembrances of this inspiring corner of Costa Rica. With your visit, you contribute directly to the earth’s sustainability through conservation and scientific research, as a portion of each dollar goes directly to The Foundation for Rainforest Research.
