Nanortalik, Greenland

Nanortalik, Greenland

Someplace has to hold the title of Greenland’s southernmost town… and it just happens to be Nanortalik. This means that, at least by Greenland standards, the climate is pretty mild. (But still pack a jacket in the summer!) Polar bears have traditionally liked it here too, which is actually where the name came from. This home to about 1,000 — people, that is — welcomes visitors with its incredible natural sights like magnificent fjords, aquatic wildlife and Greenland’s only forest. Humans have been a part of the history here dating back to the times of Vikings and Inuits, and remnants of these civilizations can still be explored today, while the Nanortalik Museum provides another look at local history with examples of historic buildings to tour.
