La Goulette (Tunis), Tunisia

Many of Tunisia's imports arrive at La Goulette, and so will you! Once a popular Tunisian vacation destination, La Goulette's seaside vibe earned it the nickname "Little Sicily." Today the historic kasbah shouldn't be overlooked, and the beaches are still beautiful, but La Goulette is also your gateway to Tunis, Tunisia's can't-miss capital and largest city. A metropolis of nearly three million, Tunis features many sights and sounds that haven't changed much in ages, and Jamaa ez-Zitouna in the Old Town might just be Exhibit A. This street is home to traditional street markets, or souks, full of small stalls offering handmade products. The narrow streets of the old-town Medina section hold more cultural and historical treasures — mosques, palaces and such — to discover. But another option for spending your time would be exploring the Roman ruins of Carthage, and over in that direction is also Sidi Bou Said, perhaps the opposite. This literal city on a hill — well, it's really more of a town — is the very picture of seaside Mediterranean perfection, with whitewashed walls and blue accents under the sun.
