Ajaccio has a historical fact to get out of the way before we proceed, and it’s not a small one. This is the town where Napoleon was born… you know, the legendary French emperor? Visit the city, the capital of the island of Corsica, and walk in his footsteps as you explore what they call “The Scented Isle.” If you’re wondering why they would do that, you only need to get a bit outside of the city and find le maquis, an aromatic bush that’s native to the island and easy to spot thanks to its cool shade of purple. But there’s plenty to see in back in local civilization, like the Roman Catholic Cathedral from the 16th Century, Maison Bonaparte (Napoleon’s birthplace) and an amazing collection of art at the Fesch Museum.
