Callao (Lima), Peru

Callao (Lima), Peru

Cruise to Callao and you're just 45 minutes from Lima. This  megalopolis was once known as the "city of kings," but today could just be called "the city of Peruvians," since about a third of the country lives here. Lima is also a fascinating look into the two sides of Peru: the sleek and modern, and the old-world, the latter of which is still present on the streets, especially in the 16th century colonial architecture near Plaza de Armas, and the iconic palaces of the Government and Archbishop, both off Plaza Mayor. Even pre-colonial sights are there to see if you know where to look. Where to look, then? Visit Huaca Pucllana, a sprawling pyramid built with bricks made from earth and clay, and the fortress of the Pachacamac, both of which are thousands of years old… even dating back to a time before the Inca people. To explore Lima's more modern pleasures, the Barranco district brings together galleries, boutiques, top coffee and great outdoor spaces for a stroll.
