Manta has been a crossroads of civilizations for longer than many cities and countries have existed. The seaport dates back to the times of the Incas, and doubtlessly helped fueled the growth of the settlement into a city of 200,000. With population has come modern comforts like restaurants and nightlife, but Manta has so many of its charming qualities of yesteryear. You can still find artisans handmaking wicker items at the village of Montecristi — and even Panama hats. (Despite the name, this is where they originated!) Manta's archaeological museum is ready to show you visions of the past, particularly ceramics of the Manteño-Huancavilca culture, some dating back over 1,000 years. Natural beauty is timeless, and the Pacoche Wildlife Refuge is a prime example, home to howler monkeys, among other plants and creatures.
