Might Savona be overshadowed by its more famous nearby neighbors? Maybe sometimes, but the hidden charm of this Italian Riviera town makes it a stop you shouldn't miss while cruising the region. Savona was long protected by the 16th-century Primar Fortezza (good guess — that's a fortress!), which still seems to keep a watchful eye on the waters of the Gulf of Genoa, while welcoming visitors inside to stroll among its high walls, tunnels and even a museum. But don't miss walking the medieval streets of Via Pia and Via Paleocapa, not to mention stopping in to some of Savona's selection of cathedrals, including its own Sistine Chapel. While this one is certainly smaller than the iconic Vatican chapel, it features incredibly ornate walls and domed ceiling that make it a great example of the style.
