Puerto Plata is lined by the famous oceanfront boulevard, Malecón, known for its open-air restaurants, shops and nightlife. In this scenic area, you can explore and enjoy Dominican culture. At the very end of the seafront you will see the massive stone walls of the Fortaleza (Fortress) of San Felipe, a historic military fortress converted into a museum. Your next stop is the real heart of Puerto Plata, a stroll around the famous Central Park. This is surrounded by original Victorian gingerbread houses, museums and the picturesque cathedral, the Iglesia San Felipe. After your city tour, you will travel to Monkeyland. The lovely and intelligent squirrel monkeys that live there have been trained to interact and spend time with visitors, and they are happy to be photographed by guests. This excursion is for all ages and perfect for families. The monkeys have become totally trusting of human contact; they will climb down from the trees to sit on your shoulder and eat from your hand. Be aware, though, that as much as they are cheeky, friendly and fun, they also have an affinity for shiny objects.
