During this walking tour, take a close look of this vibrant city and then sample the atmosphere of a typical city pub. Few places in Britain have undergone such a change in style and image as Glasgow. Scotland’s largest city in the 1980s shook off its image of industrial decline and urban decay. Instead, it now flaunts its outstanding Victorian architecture, its sparkling cultural life and the best choice of shops in Scotland. On arrival into the center of Glasgow, we will commence a walk of approximately one and a half hours concentrating on the original city. In Cathedral Square, we will admire Glasgow Cathedral from the outside, the best relic of the medieval city and one of the most ancient and historic sites in Glasgow. Subject to services, we can visit the cathedral’s interior. Standing in Cathedral Square, your guide will point out Provand’s Lordship, which is Glasgow’s oldest house, dating from 1471. We will continue our walk by strolling through the campus of Strathclyde University and onto the area known as the Italian Center, which, although re-developed, it has maintained its original 19th century street frontage. Close by is George Square where you can see the City Chambers dating from the 1870s, built in Italianate style and dominating the surrounding area. Leaving George Square, we will make our way to Buchanan Street, Glasgow’s most prestigious thoroughfare, with its outstanding eclectic architecture and smart shopping area. Pass the Gallery of Modern Art which started life as the home of one of the tobacco merchants. Glasgow pubs are well known for their conviviality and jaunty air. You may want to taste some local favorites on your own like the famous British dish or traditional Scottish Haggis with a 'pint of bitter' like a real local. Not forgetting Glasgow is rated the best for shopping after London and, as we have time in the afternoon to spend in the city center, your guide during the morning will have pointed out the main areas for a huge array of stores – Buchanan Galleries, the Italian Center, Princes Square and St. Enoch Center. You have time to indulge fully in Glasgow’s shopping experience and your return to Greenock will be during mid-afternoon.
