Details

Cross the impressive Erskine Bridge, with views of the city of Glasgow in the distance, and travel through rural areas that make up the outer districts of the metropolis. Soon Loch Lomond comes into view. The famous and beautiful inland loch, known as the Queen of Scottish Lakes and noted for its fishing, is the largest in Great Britain. Stop at the exceptionally pretty village of Luss, with its flower bedecked cottages, lying on the western shores of the loch, facing a group of wooded islands. Leaving the loch behind, the drive through scenic glens and up to the “Rest and Be Thankful”, a viewing point with a name which speaks for itself. Views over glen and mountain will leave lasting impressions before the road descends and brings you to tranquil Loch Fyne. As you head around the head of the loch, along the tree lined shore, the pretty town of Inveraray can be seen in the distance. Standing in parkland at the entrance to the town is Inveraray Castle. Built on the site of a 15th century fortress, the present castle dates from 1770, the time that the town itself was constructed. It is the seat of the Duke of Argyll, the head of Clan Campbell. Inside, there is a fine collection of family pictures and superb tapestries set in painted rooms of outstanding beauty. Enjoy free time in Inveraray for lunch on your own and some shopping time before your drive back to the ship through impressive scenery encompassing lochs, glens, parkland and peaks.
