Forest Excursion: At the mountaintop, board an open-air tram for a six-mile, roundtrip journey through old-growth forest. Sitka spruce, western hemlock, and wildflowers line the road on your way past a mountain lake. Your guides will describe the ecological and cultural significance of the forest’s unique plants and animals, and how the island’s Tlingit people are bound to its rich landscape. Bring your camera to capture pictures from spectacular viewpoints overlooking Spasski Valley, the snow-capped mountains surrounding Port Frederick, and the city of Hoonah.
Accessibility: This tour is ambulatory accessible. For the open-air tram ride, guest must be able to transfer to a seat and take a couple of steps. Wheelchairs and scooters will be left at the departure area until the tour returns.
Requirements & Restrictions: Guest must be able to travel across the graveled terrain. Guests must be able to step into the open-air tram.
Good to Know: Be prepared for the weather. This is an open-air vehicle. Guests with mobility challenges could prearrange a Care Cart for pick up. On the mountaintop there is a 500-yard graveled incline walk. There is limited assistance on the top so allow yourself the time needed to make this walk. Excursion available as of June 1, 2023.
