This excursion is a chance to see two of Alaska’s natural wonders, the Mendenhall Glacier and its abundance of wildlife.

On this amazing excursion you will:

  • Stop at the recently renovated Glacier Center to visit with Forest Service interpreters.
  • Stroll the glacier-view path or take a short walk to watch salmon spawning in a nearby stream.
  • Take a scenic drive through the Mendenhall Valley, past Auke Lake to board a water jet-powered catamaran specially designed for wildlife viewing.
  • Relax in the warm, comfortable, spacious main cabin, surrounded by large windows as your captain guides you through Stephen's Passage.
  • Listen as the on board naturalist explains the behavior and habitat of wildlife you may encounter.
  • Look for humpback and killer whales, sea lions, porpoises, harbor seals, bald eagles, and Sitka black-tailed deer.
  • Receive a $100 cash refund ($50 refund per child) if you do not see a whale. Don't anticipate a refund; in the past 9 years, whales have been sighted on every excursion.

Notes: The vessel is restroom equipped, and binoculars and souvenir route guides are provided along with complimentary snacks and beverages.

Guests should be able to walk at least 250 yards on paved inclined pathways to fully enjoy sites at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. Dress warmly and bring a rainproof jacket and don't forget your camera!
