Kiel is the capital of the state of Schleswig-Holstein and is a traditional maritime and naval city. This driving tour offers an excellent introduction to the port city of Kiel. During your excursion, you'll pass the famous Town Hall, the Kiel Fjord and the impressive Kiel Canal — the world's busiest artificial waterway, connecting the North Sea with the Baltic. Enjoy a stop for photos at the entrance to the canal. View the sluices that regulate the world’s busiest artificial waterway, stretching for almost 62 miles from Kiel to Brunsbüttel. En route, you will also see the T-750 Flandernbunker, one of 120 of its kind, used during World War II to protect up to 750 people. The bunker was partially destroyed by Allied forces after the war to prevent its further use. Enjoy a glimpse of the city’s world-renowned university, an integral part of Kiel’s maritime tradition, specializing in scientific marine research. It was here where the famous scientists, Max Planck and Heinrich Hertz, led the way for a new generation of young scientists. Heading out to the more rural east, admire the small villages that line the fjord and take in the beautiful views over the fjord to your ship.
The order of the tour may vary. Public restrooms are available but require local coinage to use (approximately €0.50 - €1.00).
