You’ll leave the pier by motor coach for a 1-hour drive to Guimarães — the birthplace of the Portuguese nation. The original capital of Portugal, Guimarães offers a wealth of historic architecture and history to discover. You will see the medieval Guimarães Castle, built in the 10th century, this castle served as a secure place to escape Viking raids. Then, visit the 15th-century Palace of the Dukes of Braganza. This palace houses a museum and art gallery featuring portraits, tapestries, fine furniture and porcelain. Afterward, embark on a walking tour through the Old Town; the tour showcases quiet corners and narrow streets, a former manor house situated in the central town square and a 10th-century church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Once your walking tour is over, you’ll be given some free time to explore the town on your own. Browse the local shops for treasures or stroll around town square. Before you return to your coach for the drive back to Leixões, stop to take pictures at the Customs Tower, which is adorned with the slogan, “Portugal was born here.”
