Leaving the harbor of Marseille, you will drive to the charming old town of Aix. This was capital of the Provence region and its attractions are numerous. First you will embark on a walking tour of the Cours Mirabeau. The wide avenue is shaded by trees and was built in the 1600s on the site of the city’s medieval ramparts; its verdant tunnel of foliage protects pedestrians from the heat of the Provencal sun. The aristocratic facades of the old mansions line the Cours and their wrought-iron balconies and finely carved doorways invite visitors to explore.
You will see a fountain dating back to 1743, particularly noteworthy for producing 93oF water which the Romans believed had healing properties. Note the different architectural styles of Saint Sauveur Cathedral with a Romanesque nave, a Merovingian baptistery and a Gothic section. These various styles date between the 5th and 17th centuries. Whatever your interest, the ambiance of Aix-en Provence makes for an enjoyable excursion in France.
Your guide will then lead you to a cheese shop with a restaurant above in a typical Provencal street. You’ll enjoy a wine & cheese tasting, both are cleverly matched to let you savor these French delicacies. Before re-boarding your coach, you will enjoy some free time in the city and then return back to the ship. The tasting consists of a variety of 6 different cheeses & 3 types of wine.
