This excursion will take you on a journey through the top ten highlights of Marseille. After a short drive from the large industrial harbor area, you will arrive in the city center and begin your sightseeing tour. First you'll pass by the magnificent Cathedral de la Major and continue along the esplanade where the new Museum of Civilizations from Europe and the Mediterranean (MuCEM) faces the sea. You'll also admire the St John Fortress and the St Laurence church. Then you'll drive to the beginning of the Old Port.

The guide will explain details about the old center of the town, including the city hall and the historic General Hospital. Opposite the harbor you'll discover the Palace of the Pharo at the very end of the port and the late Roman style Abbey of Saint Victor. Passing through the Old Port, you'll drive up to “Notre Dame de la Garde” which dominates the cityscape. Pause for a photo stop and visit of the inside of the basilica.  Continue on the scenic coastal drive along “Corniche Kennedy Road”.  Admire this impressive coastline and the islands guarding Marseille’s entrance, including the fortress of Château d'If.  At the end of the coastal road, you'll see the beaches and pass by “Le Chateau Borely”, an 18th century residence in a middle of a peaceful park just a few minutes from the sea.

On the way to the next stop, you will pass by the newly renovated “Le Velodrome” the symbolic stadium of the city.  Finally arrive at “Longchamp Palace”, a monument adorned with magnificent fountains, waterfalls and gardens celebrating the arrival of water from the Durance canal in Marseille. Stop here for photos, and then rejoin the coach driving back to the Old Port, where you'll have free time to enjoy the city, before returning to the ship.

NOTES

  • There are 170 steps to negotiate at Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica.
  • Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
